In May of 2002 I met up with Nate York after his return from Afghanistan. He told me of the work he was doing to build girls schools in the Northern Territory of Afghanistan. During the course of the evening he asked if I would be interested in joining him on this project, which I immediately accepted. During the next few months Nate put together a group of six Alaskans, two teachers, a photo journalist, an architect, my self and him. Fund raisers, donations, and personal contribution into the project made it a reality. Nate left in March 2003 to begin a project in Sheberghan. Mark "Freddy" Frederick and I followed two weeks later, with the rest of the team coming in May. With the Shebergan project progressing, the three of us went up to the Amu River to the village of Qarqin. There negotiations with village leaders ended with a plot of land 100 meters square for the building of a girls school, medical clinic, and day care center. My part became that of doing puppet workshops. First in an orphanage in Sheberghan then in a children safe house in Kabul.
