The Story of Petrushka
by Igor Stravinsky
SYNOPSIS: After days of studying the original ballet as produced by Mikhail FokineÕs Ballet Russes, we have been able to modernize this piece to make it more puppet friendly, while still telling the story of Petrushka. A puppet controlled by the evil Charlatan, head over heals in love with The Ballerina and always bested by Arap. In our modern version, Petrushka is the computer nerd. The Ballerina becomes the groupie of Arap the Rapper. She is in love with the opulence of Arap and his animal like charisma. Poor Petrushka has only the barest of an existence and hardly any charisma at all, animal or other wise. At the heart of it all is the Charlatan, played here as a Texas Oil man. His power and wealth controls the situation around him. Until the inadvertent death of Petrushka, when the roles change.
This ballet is proof of the genius of Igor Stravinsky, along with being a poignant and timely tale.
